No No Neo

I actually did some work on the blog itself today. A miracle, right?

I’d heard privately that sometimes the page would load and you’d get a splash screen saying the domain was for sale. This is not true, duh. It’s kind of a hack.

I used to look at statistics for the blog. So I had the NeoWorx counter thingy in the code. NeoWorx went out of business years and years ago, but I never got around to taking the code out. And somebody figured out how to use it, also years ago, and set up a scam. Send them money for the domain name. It just took the web spiders this long to get around to my rinky-dink blog.

So I pulled the code. And I hope it works. Let me know if it doesn’t.

And while I was at it, I put in the current URL for Vilmar’s blog down at the Disclaimer at the bottom of the blog. The other link was so old it had him as Right Wing Howler. Egad.

~~~~
Next up on the To Do list for BMEWS:
1) getting the blog email working again. I haven’t been able to log into it in most of a year. I bet there’s 20,000 junk emails in there, and maybe a couple of good comments and new member requests.
2) trying to remember how the header scroll text message things work. I figure it’s about time to pull my Sarah Palin texts off of there. It’s been what, 7 years? Or is it 11? The Obama Era was endless darkness, so I can’t recall whether McStain ran against him the first time, or whether that was Mittens Romney the pretend Republican.
I’m going to leave the tartan up in remembrance of Stewie. Allan put it there ... 16 years ago? ... when he died in his car. I liked Stewie, so it’ll stay. So many members have come and gone, several passed away. Allan and Peiper too. I haven’t heard from Mr. Christian in ... 13 years?
OMG, I’ve been running this blog forever. 14 years. Mr. Christian only had the helm for a few months, and Allan died early in 2006. The only commenters I don’t miss are Old Cat Man and Christopher.
the Atlanta thing
Over at Second City Cop:
A TALE OF TWO INCIDENTS by The Atlanta DA’s Office and the Atlanta Mayor.
Incident 1) 5 Atlanta Police Officers fired last week for using a taser to remove two college students from a car. Officers were fired because the Atlanta District Attorney’s Office deemed the Officer’s use of the taser was DEADLY PHYSICAL FORCE.
Incident 2) A suspect who failed a field sobriety test and deemed Driving While Intoxicated resists arrest, fights with police, steals the officers taser (robbery) and escapes. During the pursuit, the suspect turns and fires the taser at the officer’s head and was shot and eventually dies. The Atlanta mayor calls for the Officer to be fired because he used deadly physical force against a taser. [ a “non-lethal” weapon” ]
BURNING QUESTION: Why is using a taser considered Deadly Physical Force when it’s used by a police officer but not Deadly Physical Force when used against a police officer by a suspect?
And where is it written that the police have to have weapons parity or inferiority when engaging a situation? Pretty sure it’s always been exactly NOT that way ...
“He pulls a knife, you pull a gun, he sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the Chicago way.”
Peiper, his wife, and Alderly
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way,
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.
JRR Tolkien
Vilmar was kind enough to use some of his photographic skills to make good copies of the few pictures I got from their executor some time ago when he settled their estate. They’re gone a long time now, and probably so is the charming but decrepit little English bungalow they lived in on the outskirts of Winchester, out in the quiet farm lands. I always teased him that he was a hobbit living in the Shire, on a cowpath at the edge of the barrow downs. The house had no number, merely a name. Alderly. Their ancient [bronze age] gnarled and pollarded tree lined driveway-width street has been “discovered” and many of the old homes have been bought up and torn down to make way for modern McMansions. And so the past passes.
They never had chidren.
Peiper was my co-blogger here for years. We exchanged letters, emails, books, presents. We were both fascinated by tales of the old pirate days, and our friendship grew from there. We both loved to read, and the esoteric bits of history. I kept her well supplied with fancy chocolates and holiday goodies after he passed away, along with cards and letters on a regular basis.
I’m not sure of when this picture was from, one of their anniversaries I think, but it shows them both in good health and spirits. And that’s how I shall remember them. Peiper, JayD, Jay. His real name was Joel Diamond, and he and his wife Jennifer died a few years ago.
They were my best friends that I never met, and I only talked to her a few times. I don’t think I ever even talked to Jay, although I kept the phone message he left on our machine after hurricaine Sandy for many years. Digital brothers. She was the most charming woman I’ve ever spoken to. Ten minutes on the phone and it felt like we’d known each other our whole lives. I miss them both.
Click on the image of them for a larger version if you’d like.
UPDATE: Wardmama found a couple old emails they’d shared, and one had a picture of Peiper and “his” gold record. He was a country music DJ in Nashville for a good number of years.
image
It was the late Royce Kendall on the right, who made sure I was given a gold album (the record co. gave me a plaque for the single).  It would never have occurred to me to think I had one coming, altho in all truth I was the one to get the ball rolling and was the first DJ to pull that song off the LP and play it as a single.  Year is 76. Gosh.
Sure wish I could have my hair back if nothin’ else.
Peiper’s memory might be off a little bit. Looking into the discography of The Kendalls, a father and daughter singing duo, their big hit, was Heaven’s Just a Sin Away, gold record, Grammy winner, #1 on Billboard country tunes ... which came out in 1977.
A Belated Thank You
I’d like to give a shout out and a big THANK YOU to reader Chris H, who made a donation to BMEWS back on New Year’s Day.
Thank you Chris, thank you very much.
I rarely use or check my Paypal account, and they don’t notify me when transactions occur. So please don’t feel that I’m a heartless so-and-so because I don’t get back to you right away. I know some people have been annoyed this way in the past, but that is not my intention.
All that being said, BMEWS is pretty well funded, and while I am accepting support, I am not asking for it. This is kind of a hobby blog, which is why I don’t usually have ads. That, and no advertisers contact me any more. So it’s kind of moot.
Anyway, our late blogger Peiper set this blog up financially for a number of years, so we’re pretty good. And your donation helps enlarge the funded timeline. So, thank you once again.
I may be inept, but I couldn’t find you in the membership database here based on the information that PayPal provided. ‘m more than happy to add you to the rolls if you aren’t in them already. And that means I’ll have to access the blog email account to find any contact you may have made. Which is something else that I rarely do. That account is a royal pain, usually filled with thousands of junk mails. But for you, I’ll look.
the_end_may_be_in_sight
I just got word from my server hosting company that they are moving to newer, up to date machines at the end of the month.
Certain older software that was written with archaic SQL etc may no longer run.
This blog was old when I got it, with out of date software even then. And I’ve been running it for how long? 10 years? No, not that long. January 7, 2008 I took over from Mr. Christian, and he had it a bit more than half a year from when The Skipper died, and that was around the end of May 2007. So I’ve been doing this eight and a half years, going towards nine.
And ya know what? Not a damn thing has changed. Every single issue I’ve written about and railed against is still out there, just as bad and nasty as before, if not worse.
Here’s a paste from one of Allan’s last posts:
Meanwhile, while you slept a few thousand more Mexicans crossed the border last night, Wal-Mart built six more stores somewhere, the trade deficit with China increased by a few billion dollars, the North Koreans and Iranians came up with seventeen more plans to prove they are barking mad and several thousand more non-Muslims were murdered in Darfur by followers of the Prophet For Profit.
Then again, you already know all this and just need a place to get together and figure out what we’re all going to do when the roof caves in - and make no mistake, the rafters are crumbling. Depressing? Sure, but what are we going to do?
We can start to fix our government eighteen months from now in the 2008 elections. The interim is going to be dicey as somebody out there decided in the last election to install a whole bunch of really crazy people in the Congress and Senate. That was not my fault, by the way - and neither was it George Bush’s fault.
As for the rest of the sitrep, we can wall ourselves off from the rest of the world and experiment with isolationism again or we can continue to muddle our way through the minefield of international relations - and that is where the problem comes in. We’re just no damn good at realpolitik. Not this administration, the whole country has never been real good at the devious games diplomats play. We haven’t been at this game long enough to understand all the rules.
All I can really tell you is (a) keep a firm grasp of right and wrong, (b) stay involved in government and watch the bastards in Washington every minute, (c) use every legal means to make sure you can defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and (d) keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere.
Hardly a thing has changed.
Anyway, it would cost a fortune to bring this old clunk up to date, and it would require a ton of work to migrate everything to a new platform, blah blah blah. I’m not going to do it.
And frankly, I miss Jay terribly every time I sit down at this keyboard. The fun is gone for me.
So what I’m saying is ... if the blog survives the server move, fine. If it doesn’t, well, so long and thanks for all the fish.
And if it does survive, I think it’s time to pass the mantle. I covered the Obama years. Who wants to cover the Clinton ones?
All I can really tell you is (a) keep a firm grasp of right and wrong, (b) stay involved in government and watch the bastards in Washington every minute, (c) use every legal means to make sure you can defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and (d) keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere.
Good words to live by. Who will carry them into the future for us?
Last Post For Peiper
It is my sad duty to let you all know that Joel Diamond died this morning sometime before 11am Eastern.
Known to us as Peiper, or JayD, or JD, or Jay, or whatever ... he had been released from hospital to a recovery center about a week ago, after being returned to the hospital after a mere 30 hours in the recovery center before that. Prior to that, he was in pretty intensive care since March 29, when he suffered a major thoracic aneurysm. And everything went downhill from there.
His wife Jen left me a message on my answering machine which I did not see until I got home this evening. She is distraught of course.
I can’t write right now. And to think I just started bombarding him with cards and letters, celebrating his second escape from Nurse Ratchett. After all, he was alert, up, and walking around a bit. So it was all Hurrah!!
All that mail should just about be showing up there now. I doubt if he ever even saw one.
I’ll call her tomorrow. I want to send huge flowers. I want this to have not happened.
He’s Alive !!
imageimageimage
Miracle of Miracles
I made telephone contact with Peiper’s wife!
And as usual we had the most wonderful conversation. She is the most charming lady and so easy to talk to.
Sadly, things are not going super great for our expat buddy.
Our Peiper is still “in hospital”, forced to wear some kind of harness on his upper body to restrain his movements to protect the work the doctors have done on him. He is slowly leaking blood into his lungs and the doctors have not been able to find out where it’s coming from. He is able to get up and walk around a bit, but he tires easily and sleeps most of the time. He is mentally alert, rather grumpy, and bored to death. He watches the Travel Channel on the room’s telly. Sounds to me like his condition is “guarded” at this point, a half step better than “critical”, but I’m no doctor. He’s been in hospital since Easter.
Wardmama, his wife Jen says your card arrived, thank you so much.
I am pretty certain he does not have access to any kind of computer or cell phone, so emails and text messages are out. I’m going to have to beat myself into submission and locate a pen and a stamp and sit down and actually write him a letter.
You could write him as well if you want. I’ll put his address up below the fold here, although it is online and not at all hard to locate in at least 4 ways if you know his real name. So send him a cheerful card and a kind word.
Pray For Peiper
I got a phone call today.
“Hello, is this Drew? This is Jen, Jay’s wife. In England.”
And the bottom dropped out of my world. At a certain point in life, there are phone calls you just do not want to get.
Well, poor old Peiper has had himself a major heart problem. He’s lucky to live barely more than around the corner from one of the better cardiac centers on that verdant island, and they got him right in.
Six hours of surgery later, and he’s in an induced coma until the situation stabilizes.
It’s something to do with one or more of the layers in his aorta. And bleeding. And that’s all I really know for sure. Updates when I get them, which I might not get very often.
03/31/16 UPDATE: None. I haven’t heard a word, but I’m not really expecting to. I’m sure she’s got plenty enough to worry about. Lyndon, did you get my email?? Thank you, everyone, for your kind words of support. Keep the prayers coming.
04/01/16 UPDATE: HE’S ALIVE! ALIVE I TELL YOU!! I got another call from Jen. Jay is alive, awake, no longer bleeding from the heart or from the brain, and does not seem to have suffered any brain damage. Awesome news, but Say What?? Bleeding brains? OMFG.  Crivens and a half, there’s a story here for him to tell when he is up to it. Which might be quite a while. And he wasn’t in the local hospital, they took him to South Hampton which is a better care center. Well, fine. Fine.
A BMEWS First
A Sort-Of Award Because Today We Made BMEWS History
Another little knot on our blog’s long running timeline
image
A bit big for the digital mantelpiece, but what can you do?
Today is the first time ever in the entire life of this blog that we have had posts to put up from four different bloggers. Sure, we’ve had four or more posts on one day many times. But never from four of us. Primarily because there haven’t been four of us active. Hardly ever. Actually we have several more folks who can throw up a post whenever they want, but we haven’t heard from most of them in years and years now.
So today is our first four poster day. Thus the four poster bed award. Nyuk nyuk, nyuk perhaps, but it’s better than a stale liverwurst sandwich on white bread.
Go team!
Type in a title up here. you have to have one
Headline Goes Up Here IF You Want A Headline
A hypothetical post, to show how simple the post editor is ... this is NOT what the members see when they write a comment.
Title of some article from an online source
A reasonable amount of text copied from the source that gives the flavor of the content.
Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda.
Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda.
Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda.
Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. Blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda.
A hyperlink to the source page of the information, often placed a little bit into the quoted text around the few words that are the heart of the subject.
Hey, don’t forget to pick a category to file your post under, by clicking the Categories button at the top of the editor.
image
an embedded picture, sized down for faster loading. It is wrapped in a link to the original bigger version of the picture, and the whole thing is centered on the page. don’t forget to center support text for centered pictures!
you upload pictures by clicking the little icon in the upper right corner under the QuickSave button, then following the instructions in the pop-up boxes.
Some wise guy commentary by the blogger. The “fisk” button indents the text and turns it all bold.
DropCap thing works too, but it rarely ever gets used. It can be pretty fussy.
: these are blank lines. 4 of them actually.
  this is the symbol for a blank space. html is not “WYSIWYG”; it will not space things the way you want if you set them up with the space bar. And the Tab key doesn’t work.
and if the post is going to go on for a long time, or if there are lots and lots of pictures, we try to stick them “below the fold” which means in the Extended Text area:
I am going to beat it
Getting My Groove Back
I’ve had some pretty severe writer’s block lately. I just haven’t been able to hit the keyboard and throw works at this blog and get the posts out. Sure, there’s been some burnout because the stories don’t change. The Middle East is still a mess, Obama is still a traitor masquerading as a fool, Hillary is still a lying, corrupt, murderous thug. And then there’s Trump. And those damn “rapeugees” invading Europe. I start feeling like what’s his name with the rock ... Sissypuss I think he was called, although I may be confusing my mythological Greeks with Carvel ice cream cakes?
Right. Suffering from “KD”. Keyboard Dysfunction. What can you do? [ take one Sophie  Viagra Vergara and contact your doctor for a blogging session that lasts longer than 4 hours? ] I have ideas for posts. I have all sorts of links. I do background research. And then somehow it all just deflates and goes limp, and I have to go to work or do some housework or shopping or whatever.
But I can beat this. I think I can, I think I can, I know I can!
What’s easy to post on? Ah, Fun League. Our little team pretty much sucks this year, but we’re in it for fun. We manage to hit the bottom of the standings and then bounce back a few slots time after time. I think we’re hovering just below 50% wins, which means we are sinking, but slowly. This week we didn’t quite sink. None of us were quite warmed up enough in the first game, posting lousy scores way below average. I threw a 137. Yikes. A guy on the opponent’s team was having the game of his life - we always bring out the very best in our opponents, go figure - and threw a 260. Awsome. A 260 is 2 spares shy of a perfect game, so that fellow was hitting strikes all over the place. Bastard. So we went down in flames in Game 1, losing by something like 156 pins.
Game 2 we woke up, and the other team had shot their load and forgot to take their ”Sophies” or something. So we shined, and they were flat. I tossed a 214 and we won that one by 79. Look out, here we come, gonna eat up your lead and take that wood!
Game 3, not only did I have all my ducks in a row AND had them wired tight, I must have stapled their little feet to the floor so they couldn’t go anywhere [ just an expression. No actual ducks are allowed inside the bowling alley, and running in and out with a staple gun every frame is severely frowned upon. ]. You know it. It turned out that the elusive strike line was half a damn board to the outside on my approach footing. Once I moved, and kept my eye on the target, I just hammered the crap out of the pins. The other guys on my team did well too, but I threw a 240 [ a pile of strikes on the end of a game that started out as a Dutch 200 through the 6th. So we won that last game big time, I just missed a 600 series for the night, and we ... still lost overall wood. But only by 6 pins!
There. I can so post. And throw in a bunch of links, and crack wise, and tell a story.  Now, if only I could convince myself that politics was interesting again, then I could truly get all fired up.
A Right Writer
A blog you should be reading ... Sultan Knish. It’s essays on the world situation, politics, religion, etc.
Pretty good stuff. Worth reading every post.
Example:
The Death of Europe
European leaders talk about two things these days; preserving European values by taking in Muslim migrants and integrating Muslim migrants into Europe by getting them to adopt European values.
It does not occur to them that their plan to save European values depends on killing European values.
...
Europe invested in the values of its welfare state. The Muslim world invested in large families. Europe expects the Muslim world to bail out its shrinking birth rate by working and paying into the system so that its aging population can retire. The Muslim migrants however expect Europe to subsidize their large families with its welfare state while they deal some drugs and chop off some heads on the side.
...
Europe is drinking rat poison to cure a cold. Instead of changing its values, it’s trying to maintain them by killing itself. The Mohammed retirement plan won’t save European Socialism. It will bury it.
1.6 Million Hits A Month
Running a blog named Voe, Emilie Nereng was Norway’s top blogger for 2 years running, 2009-2010, when she was only 14-15 years old. Her readership was larger than most daily Norwegian newspapers. After all, she made her own rules and followed them strictly - 2 posts a day and be positive and happy! - so how could success elude her?
Since then she’s done some modeling, and sang on TV in front of an audience of 80,000 people, and been the youngest lecturer ever at Lillehammer College. These days, at the ripe old age of 20, she remains a leader in social media and is a noted fuutbol authority.
She also does basic stretching exercise videos.  And “look what I bought at the mall” shopping videos.
This way lies fame and fortune. Go figure.
1.6 million hits a month.
I think she has some secret advantage. Must be the puppy.
Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
